Sometimes, it takes learning who you were, to figure out who you want to be. Kate, our heroine, finds her old summer diaries piled in the back of her closet. Along with her, we’re able to learn more about her past, her family, and her childhood best friend - all etched in a glittery gel pen.
One of the hardest struggles I had writing the book was that I had to write from her POV in different times in her life. I had to know how her voice changed, what’s realistic dialogue for a girl of 8,11,13…, and all the nuances in between.
The diary entry I have for you today is one of my favorites. Kate is 11 and Mark is 12. Such an odd age littered with stubbornness and self hatred. You’ll find them, and her brother, all hanging out in the living room of her families summer house.
